Wreathing in the Holidays

The day after Thanksgiving has left everyone in pleasant food comas and a plethora of delicious leftovers for the next week. However, it has also left me with plenty of ideas for a few new calligraphy and watercolor projects.

Today, I'll introduce a new and simple holiday wreath. Although, I've used decidedly fall colors, I think you can adapt the color scheme to suit any season!

Materials Needed:

1. Watercolor brush- I've used a Winsor & Newton 111 round

2. Watercolor palette

3. Watercolor paper- normally I use 140 lb. weight

4. Tombow dual brush pens or pentel fudenoske sign pen- this will depend on how large you want the downstrokes to be or how large the piece is in general

5. Pencil

6. Water of course!

Step One: Lightly outline a circle that will serve as a template for the wreath's shape. However, this step is completely optional if you prefer to freehand.

Step Two: Using your first shade draw slightly curved lines to fit the wreath's shape and alternate smaller lines coming off of the larger line to create a branch effect.

Step Three: Begin adding your second, third, and fourth color in the same pattern that overlap one another.

What's great about this pattern is that you don't need to worry about it looking perfect. You can always go back in and add colors or hide holes with more branches.

Step Four: Add your verbiage!

This project would be great if you're just starting out because it's not only a versatile shape, it's also quite simple.
